Hussain Ali Manik began painting while at Majeedhiyya School and later took lessons from Maldivian artist, Sarudhaaru Dhonbe. A regular participant in art and crafts exhibitions organized by the government, Hussain received several awards in these exhibitions in various categories including painting and hand printing. Hussain also received recognition for his budding talent when he received Maldivian National Youth Artist award.
Hussain's early career was as an illustrator for the Education Development Center (EDC), Male', illustrating textbooks. From 2002 to 2005, Hussain had run his own art gallery where his works were on display. Several of his works are owned by Maldivian collectors, housed in commercial enterprises as well as in private homes and abroad.
Hussain, whose primary media are oil, acrylic, relief work and cement, attended numerous exhibitions and SAARC Painters' Camp, India, in 1989 and Geroge Keet Foundation International Artists Camp, Sri Lanka, in 2001.
